How to install FreeSurfer on Ubuntu

Get the appropriate download link from here: http://surfer.nmr.mgh.harvard.edu/fswiki/Download

If you want to use our tmslab Software, you need FreeSurfer Version 4.5.0. Version 5.0.0 didn't work as desired.

# prerequisites
sudo apt-get install tcsh
cd ~
# this is the 64 bit version
wget http://surfer.nmr.mgh.harvard.edu/pub/dist/freesurfer/4.5.0/freesurfer-Linux-centos4_x86_64-stable-pub-v4.5.0-full.tar.gz
cd /usr/local/
sudo tar -xzvf ~/freesurfer-*.tar.gz
echo "FREESURFER_HOME=/usr/local/freesurfer" >> ~/.bashrc
echo 'source $FREESURFER_HOME/SetUpFreeSurfer.sh' >> ~/.bashrc
# delete the original file to save space, if you don't need it anymore
# rm ~/freesurfer-*.tar.gz

Now register at https://surfer.nmr.mgh.harvard.edu/registration.html and paste the license code emailed to you here:

sudo gedit /usr/local/freesurfer/.license

In Ubuntu Lucid we had to set the following symlink:

sudo ln -s /usr/lib/libtiff.so.{4,3}
